About the Journal
The Journal of Health Professions Learning and Technology (JHPLT) is a peer‑reviewed, open‑access, digital journal dedicated to the technologies reshaping how health and human‑services professionals learn together — including artificial intelligence (AI), digital health records, digital communication, and patient simulation.
We publish research, reviews, case reports, and commentaries at the intersection of health professions education and learning technology. Our readership spans medicine, nursing, pharmacy, the allied health professions, dentistry, behavioural health and the wider human services, and we particularly welcome work that crosses those boundaries rather than staying within one profession.
Aims & Scope
- Artificial intelligence in health professions education, including conversational agents, AI‑assisted feedback, and the limits and risks of these tools
- Patient simulation: virtual, standardized and manikin‑based, and interprofessional team simulation
- Digital health records and their use as a teaching and assessment environment
- Digital communication and telehealth — teaching, practising and assessing clinical communication through digital channels
- Design, implementation and evaluation of technology‑enhanced learning
- Assessment, competency mapping, and learning analytics
- Access, equity, and scalability of education technology
Open Access
All articles are freely available to read and download immediately upon publication under a CC BY 4.0 license. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal a license to publish.
Publication Model
The journal publishes on a rolling basis and is entirely digital: articles appear as soon as they are ready rather than waiting for an issue to close. Each article is assigned to the quarterly issue open at the time of publication, and is cited by its article number within the volume — for example JHPLT, 1(2), e14. Volumes follow the calendar year. An electronic ISSN is being registered, and digital object identifiers (DOIs) will be minted once Crossref registration is complete.
Editorial Board
The journal is edited by Jeffrey J. Borckardt, Ph.D. (Medical University of South Carolina), supported by an editorial board drawn from across the health professions. See the full editorial board.
Peer Review
Submissions undergo editorial screening followed by external peer review. Reviewers provide recommendations and confidential comments to guide editorial decisions.
